Philippines facing fines for SBP’s Asian Games pullout

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas’ withdrawal from the 2018 Asian Games won’t go unpunished.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Ricky Vargas said the SBP is expecting sanctions from the Olympic Council of Asia after their withdrawal with a few weeks left before the start of the competition.

“I think so, there will be a sanction which is probably in terms of a monetary fine,” said Vargas in media conference call at PBA office on. “I don’t know if there’s a sanction outside of the fine.”

This isn’t the only fine the SBP has been slapped with in recent weeks with Fiba imposing hefty penalties for brawl between the Philippines and Australia during the 2018 World Cup Asian Qualifiers.

Apart from the suspensions slapped on the players, Fiba fined the SBP around P13.3 million or CHF 250,000.

Vargas, however, assured that the effects of SBP’s withdrawal from the Jakarta Games won’t spillover to the other sports the Philippines is participating in.

“There’s no reason for it to spillover, this is an SBP decision so it should not affect the POC and the other sports,” said Vargas.
