Already solid on defense, San Beda looks to execute better on offensive end

As fearsome as San Beda has been early in the NCAA Season 94, what’s frightening is the Red Lions still have a lot of room for improvement.

San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez said his players will have their work cut out for them on the offensive end.

“As of now we’re good with our defense. We’re a good defensive team but then again, it’s more of making our shots,” said Fernandez after San Beda steamrolled Emilio Aguinaldo College, 61-46, on Tuesday.

The Red Lions have been topnotch defensively and their ability to clamp down on their opponents was on full display against the Generals.

San Beda smothered Emilio Aguinaldo College in the third quarter where the Generals only scored eight points.

“We kept thinking about how the third quarter is the quarter of EAC so we really had to step it up,” said Fernandez, who also pointed out that the Generals once scored 39 points in the third quarter in a loss to Lyceum earlier this season.

The Generals also had trouble taking care of the ball with the Lions all over them as they turned it over 29 times.

San Beda’s offense, however, is a different story. The Lions shot just 34 percent from the field and 47 percent from the free throw line where they made only 11 out of their 23 attempts.

The low number of assists per game is also a cause of concern for Fernandez.

“Hopefully, as the elimination goes on we’ll be able to have more than 14 assists because right now we have five, 10 and nine so hopefully, we can improve on that.”
