A return to form for Jayvee Mocon was just another day in the office for CJ Perez. The result for both stars, though, was the same: They kept their teams undefeated.
Perez had another MVP-type performance, unloading 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds as Lyceum streaked to a sixth straight win after dumping Perpetual Help, 91-77, Friday in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at Filoil Flying V Arena.
Perez added three assists and two steals as he kept the Pirates atop the heap and handed the Altas their second defeat in four games.
Mocon, meanwhile, exploded for 22 points and 16 rebounds to snap out of a slump and helped San Beda keep in step with Lyceum after an 88-70 dismantling of Mapua.
The reigning back-to-back champions notched a fourth straight win behind Mocon’s resurgence. Before the game, Mocon had been averaging a pedestrian—by his standards—11 points and 8.7 rebounds a game.
“It was a total team effort but Javee stepped up big in this game,” said San Beda coach Boyet Fernandez.
Donald Tankoua had 12 points and seven rebounds while Robert Bolick ran the San Beda offense to finish with 11 points and eight assists.
Mapua slipped to 2-3.
Rookie JP Maguliano, meanwhile, had the game of his career thus far as Emilio Agunaldo stunned San Sebastian, 79-77, in overtime to book its first victory after four straight defeats.
Maguliano, who came from Adamson in the UAAP, erupted for career-highs 30 points and 17 rebounds to boost the Generals to their breakthrough victory.
