University of Perpetual Help needed the endgame heroics by Jelo Razon to escape winless Jose Rizal University, 78-72, in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Razon flourished down the stretch, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers inside the last two minutes to lift the Altas to their fourth win in six games.
“We made shots and we made stops. Those are the only ways to win games,” said Perpetual Help head coach Frankie Lim, whose squad tied Letran in third place.
With the game tied at 72, Razon knocked down a triple put the Altas ahead for good, 75-72, with 1:12 remaining.
Feeling it, Razon made another clutch 3-pointer to clinch the game with 33.4 ticks to go.
And while Perpetual Help made big shots to end the game, JRU went scoreless in the final two and a half minutes.
Edgar Charcos led the Altas with 25 points, including 10 in the third quarter, and nine rebounds while Razon finished with 18 points.
Jed Mendoza paced the Heavy Bombers, who dropped their seventh straight game, with 21 points on 20 shots.
