College of St. Benilde already surpassed what it had done a season ago after it claimed its fifth win, beating Arellano University, 70-62, in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.
The Blazers, who finished Season 93 with a 4-14 record, have shown tremendous improvement this season, improving to a 5-3 slate as the first round nears its close.
Justin Gutang put up a game-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds for St. Benilde while Ray Carlos added 11 points.
Yankie Haruna missed out on a double-double for the Blazers coming up with nine points and nine boards.
Defense was the Blazers biggest asset in the game as they limited the Chiefs to just 29.17 percent shooting, 21-of-72, while converting on 43.1 percent of their attempts, 25-of-58.
“The team played well, we held our own in defense even without Clement,” said Blazers head coach TY Tang, who had his first string of back-to-back wins since he assumed the job in Season 93.
Rence Alcoriza had 14 points and three rebounds for the 3-4 Chiefs.
