UST’s Rondina, Barbon sweep BVR field for gold medal finish

University of Santo Tomas showed its class in the sand courts after humbling Perlas 21-18, 21-19 in the finals of the Beach Volleyball Republic on Tour Manila Open women’s division Wednesday at SM Sands By the Bay.

Cherry Rondina and Babylove Barbon’s finals sweep of Dzi Gervacio and Bea Tan capped off their perfect run in the tournament.

UST’s men’s team of rookie Jeron Requinton and Krung Arbasto swept National University’s Bryan Bagunas and James Natividad, 21-19, 21-14, for the male division championship.

Both of UST’s teams were undefeated in the tournament and never once dropped a set during the whole leg.

Rondina is also a two-time champion in the Manila Open after having won last year’s title with partner Jinggay Bangad.

Smart’s Grethcel Soltones and Alyssa Eroa swept Kempal’s Roma Doromal and Chantal Rodriguez, 21-12, 21-14, for the bronze medal in the women’s division.

Univesity of Perpetual Help’s Jayjay Solamillo and Gilbert Balmores completed the podium in the men’s division after their comeback three-set win , 12-21, 21-19, 18-16, over Air Force’s Ranran Abdilla and Jessie Lopez.
