The men of the Philippine Golf Tour braces for a duel of iron play as they tackle a short but unfamiliar course in the rich ICTSI Club Filipino De Cebu Invitational beginning Wednesday in Danao City. The par-71 Club Filipino De Cebu layout has been spruced up to championship condition in time for its first-ever hosting of a Philippine Golf Tour event, a P3.5 million championship that will be led by veterans Tony Lascuña and Elmer Salvador. Also in the mix are in-form Jobim Carlos and fellow PGT and PGT Asia leg winners Kim Joo Hyung of Korea, Jay Bayron and Justin Quiban and Philippine Masters champion Jerson Balasabas. Carlos looms as the player to beat with his three victories and a string of top five finishes in the last 10 tournaments. The winner in the final stop of the four-leg Visayan swing of the PGT circuit will pocket P650,000.
8th Aboitiz Invit’l tees off Sept. 5
The Aboitiz Invitational, one of the premier championships on the Philippine Golf Tour Asia calendar, braces for its eighth staging on Sept. 5 to 8 with one of the strongest casts ever assembled for the $100,000-event at Orchard Golf and Country Club’s Palmer Course in Dasmariñas, Cavite. “We are firming up the cast that will feature the local tour’s big guns and a slew of PGTA campaigners from Asia and other parts of the world,” said Colo Ventosa, general manager of the organizing Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. The Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc., with major stakes in power, banking, food, infrastructure and land, joined the golf tour in 2011. Miguel Tabuena edged Angelo Que by one at Manila Southwoods last year. Jay Bayron will gun for No. 3 after wins in 2011 (Cebu) and 2016 (Wack Wack).
