The stars of the women’s national volleyball team have asked for more time to develop and play at a world-class level.
Out of the medal round and now looking at a seventh-place finish, the Filipino women, led by team captain Aby Maraño and their biggest superstar, Alyssa Valdez, took to their social media accounts to ask people to “trust the system.”
And more help is coming their way with Rebisco renewing its ties with the national team, according to top honcho Jonathan Ng.
“We are really proud of the girls and the coaches and very happy to be part of the team,” Ng said. “Now one thing we really ask is for the LVPI (Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas) to really come up with a serious program and we will be serious in our commitment to support the national team program.”
The Philippines lost to World No. 1 China, which didn’t hold its punches, in scoring a 25-15, 25-9, 25-7 rout that sent the country to the qualification round.
“It’s not the results we wanted, but I felt that we are getting there and we just have to trust the system,” said Valdez.
“We put up a fight and we didn’t surrender,” wrote Maraño in Filipino in her Instagram account. “It’s still a long way to go but let’s remain patient.”
The Philippines returned to Asiad volleyball after a 36-year hiatus.
