Ginebra kicks off PBA Governors’ Cup with win over Columbian

Barangay Ginebra started off its conference the right way with a cool 96-84 victory over hapless Columbian in the 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup Friday at Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The Gin Kings not only started the final conference on the right track but they also extended the Dyip’s agony to four straight losses.

After going back and forth in the first three quarters, the Gin Kings were able to pull away from 66-all early in the with an 18-6 run for a commanding 84-72 lead with 3:23 left in the game.

Justin Brownlee put the game beyond reach with two three-pointers for 94-78 lead with 1:13 remaining.

“It took us a long time to get going and in the fourth quarter we finally got our legs and we started to play the way we liked to,” said Ginebra head coach Tim Cone.

“But we made turnovers, silly turnovers, we weren’t rebounding and many respect to the guys that we were lucky to be able to pull this one out.”

Although Ginebra managed to outrebound the Dyip by a wide margin, 65-45, the gin Kings turned the ball over 24 times allowing Colmbian to score 23 points off of those miscues.

Brownlee put up 34 points and 20 boards for the Gin Kings while Greg Slaughter and Aguilar had 14 points apiece and a combined 16 rebounds.

Jerramy King led Columbian with 17 points while Akeem Wright had 12 points, nine rebounds, and five assists.
