UAAP cancels Saturday games due to ‘Ompong’

The UAAP has decided to postpone its Saturday games of the Season 81 men’s basketball tournament due to super typhoon “Ompong.”

The games between Ateneo and Far Eastern University and Adamson University and De La Salle scheduled at Araneta Coliseum will be played at a later date.

“After due consultation and considering what appears to be a severe weather disturbance, the UAAP deems it best for everyone’s interests to cancel the basketball games tomorrow,” said Season 81 president Nilo Ocampo in a statement.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration said in its severe weather bulletin that “Ompong” won’t directly affect Metro Manila but the region has been put under Public Signal No. 1.

“Ompong” moves west northwest at a pace of 20 kilometers per hour and packs maximum sustained winds of 205 kph near the center and gustiness up to 255 kph.

The UAAP, through tournament host University of Santo Tomas, has also suspended the chess games for Sept. 15 and 16 and moved it to the 19th.
