League rebound record reset twice in one night in Datu Cup

The MPBL’s rebounding record was reset twice in one night as Laguna became the latest team to bring down a favored giant and Davao Occidental pushed ahead with its winning run Wednesday in the Datu Cup.

Michael Mabulac was the first to eclipse the seven-month record held by Gian Abrigo for most rebounds by an individual after anchoring Krah-Laguna’s 74-68 triumph over powerhouse Manila-Robust.

Mabulac grabbed 21 rebounds to break the 20 set by Abrigo while playing for Quezon City.

It was the third straight win by the Heroes, although none of their previous victories were bigger than the one they hammered out against the Stars. Laguna (5-3) thus moves up to third spot in the Southern Division.

But Mabulac’s record lasted only two hours as ex-pro Mark Yee hauled down 24 boards to go with 16 points to lead the Davao-Cocolife Tigers past Pasay, 68-61.

His heroics handed the Tigers their third straight win and moved up to second place in the Southern Division with a 6-3 card.
