NCAA: Letran stumps JRU, keeps hold of no. 3

Colegio de San Juan de Letran maintained its hold of the third seed after overpowering Jose Rizal University, 89-79, in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Knights claimed their third straight win and moved to a 10-4 record to create a one-game separation from fourth seed University of Perpetual Help that holds a 9-5 slate.

There was no letting up from the Knights who built themselves a comfortable 19-point lead, 57-38, heading into the break.

“It was a good win for us although we relaxed a little bit in the end but at least we were able to regain our intensity and we got the win,” said Letran head coach Jeff Napa in Filipino.

Nico Galvelo, who went scoreless in the previous week, lit up for 16 points in less than 21 minutes of play for the Knights while Bong Quinto had a 14-point, 12-assist double-double.

JP Calvo also had his share of playmaking for the Knights with 13 points, five rebounds, and six assists, while Larry Muyang had 11 points and 12 boards.

Jed Mendoza led all scorers with 25 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while MJ Dela Virgen had 16 points, seven rebounds, and four assists for the bottom-seeded Heavy Bombers who hold a 2-12 record.
