NCAA: Perpetual overcomes San Sebastian, bolsters hold on 4th seed
University of Perpetual Help survived a tough showing from San Sebastian, 85-77, to maintain its hold of the fourth seed in the NCAA Season 94 men’s basketball tournament Thursday at FilOil Flying V Centre.
The Altas were down five, 69-64, with less than two minutes left in regulation but Jelo Razon and Edgar Charcos came up big for the men in maroon to send it the game into overtime.
It was in the extra period when Perpetual finally got to flex its muscle, going on a 9-0 run to take an 81-71 lead with 1:17 left in the clock.
“It shows a lot of character on my players,” said Perpetual head coach Frankie Lim. “It all boils down to proper execution of our plays and looking for Prince [Eze] underneath and Charcos making a three-point play.”
“San Sebastian is a tough team to beat.”
Perpetual improved to a 10-5 card after their fifth straight win while the Golden Stags dropped to a 4-11 record.
Eze, who played the whole game, was a monster down on the block for the Atas coming away with 25 points and 23 rebounds with four blocks.
Charcos, meamwhile, was clutch for Perpetual converting a three-point play with 40.4 seconds left in regulation and eventually finishing with 12 points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
Jeffrey Coronel also filled the stat sheets for the Altas with 15 points, six rebounds, and five assists while Razon missed out on a double-double with 13 points and nine boards.
Alvin Capobres led San Sebastian with 18 points while Michael Calisaan had a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.
