MANILA—Filipino Davis Cupper Treat Conrad Huey partnered with Indian Purav Raja to crush a Polish wild card pair and capture the men’s doubles crown of the Trofeo Paolo Corazzi ATP Challenger in Cremona, Italy.
Huey, the 25-year-old No. 2 player of the country’s Davis Cup team behind Cecil Mamiit, joined hands with Raja to rout Tomasz Bednarek and Mateusz Kowalczyk, 6-1, 6-2, in the finals of the 30,000 euro event.
They pocketed the champions’ purse of 1,900 euros (about P116,000) aside from ATP ranking points.
Huey is currently No. 97 in the world in singles but went as high as 91st last April after reaching the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger in Athens, Greece.
The champion pair barged into the finals after besting Nikola Mektic of Croatia and Sanchai Ratiwatana of Thailand, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).
Huey and Raja earlier eliminated Giuseppe Menga and Andrea Stoppini of Italy in the quarters, and Oliver Chauroin of France and Sadik Kadir of Australia in the first round.
Huey didn’t see action in the singles competition to concentrate on the doubles.
Last March, he partnered with Mamiit to win the doubles against formidable Japan in their Davis Cup duel at the Plantation Bay in Cebu. Japan went on to clinch the tie, 3-1.
He is expected to once again don the PH colors on July 8-10 for the second round playoffs against New Zealand.
