Sander Severino and the amazing chess team gave the Philippines a huge bump in its medal haul Wednesday in the Asian Para Games in Jakarta.
Severino grabbed the gold medal in the men’s individual standard P1.
Another gold came after the squad composed of Redor Menandro Arman Sebaste and Israel Peligro topped the men’s team standard VI—B2/B3 event.
Severino, Jasper Rom and Henry Roger Lopez also nabbed the gold medal in the men’s team standard P1.
Menandro also picked up a silver medal in the men’s individual standard VI while Sebaste nabbed a bronze in the men’s indivdual standard VI—B2/B3.
Rom won a bronze medal as well in the men’s individual standard P1.
Meanwhile, bowlers Kim Ian Chi and Samuel Matias won the silver in the mixed Doubles TPB10+TPB10 event three days after Chi won the gold in men’s singles TPB10.
Later Wednesday night, swimmer Ernie Gawilan won his second gold medal when he finished in the same time as Japanese Daisuke Ejima in the 100m backstroke.
Youth Olympics
In Buenos Aires, Asian Games gold medalist Yuka Saso fired a one-over 71 for a share of second place in the first round of women’s individual golf competition Tuesday in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games at Hurlingham Club.
The 17-year-old Saso, of Filipino and Japanese lineage, had five birdies and six bogeys for the day to fall three shots behind solo leader Alesia Nobilio of Italy.
Carl Jano Corpus also fired an identical round of 71 in the company of three other players at fifth place and stayed two strokes behind the leaders.
Kiteboarder Christian Tio remains in contention for a medal in his event after finishing second, fifth and eighth in three races for the day.
Tio, son of a Filipino mother and a Norwegian father, will sail for three more days hoping to keep within striking distance of the leaders for a podium finish.
