Gawilan, chessers lead last-day Pinoy charge in Jakarta

Ernie Gawilan and the amazing chess team continued to make waves for the Philippines Friday in the final day of the Asian Para Games in Jakarta.

Gawilan, born without feet and a left hand, captured his third swimming gold when he ruled the men’s freestyle S7.

The Philippine men’s chess team bagged two more golds, a silver and four bronze medals, this time in the rapid event.

Sander Severino also claimed his fourth gold medal after winning the men’s individual rapid P1 and the men’s team rapid P1 along with Jasper Rom and Henry Roger Lopez.

The Philippines went 1-2-3 in individual rapid P1 with Lopez taking the silver and Rom bagging the bronze.

Arman Subaste (men’s individual rapid B2-B3); Francis Ching, Rodolfo Sarmiento and Cecilio Bilog (men’s team rapid chess B); and Redor Menandro, Subaste and Israel Peligro (men’s team rapid B2-B3) also won bronze medals.

In cycling, Arthur Bucay came away with the gold medal in the men’s C5 4000M individual pursuit.

In Argentina, Yuka Saso’s hopes for a podium finish ended with a missed six-foot putt that relegated her to fourth place in the 2018 Youth Olympics.
