Far Eastern University pulled the rug from under Ateneo and came away with a 73-71 win Wednesday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s basketball tournament.
Valerie Mamaril scored the game-winning layup that completed the Lady Tamaraws’ fiery comeback from 17 points down and gave them the solo second spot at 6-2 behind the undefeated National U.
Jollina Go had the chance to send the game into overtime but missed an undergoal stab in the Lady Eagles’ final possession.
Clare Casto led the Lady Tamaraws’ assault 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks while Mamaril and Fatima Quiapo added 14 markers each.
Go led Ateneo, which dropped to 2-6, with 21 points on 5-of-8 three-point shooting while Trina Guytingco contributed 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals.
Meanwhile, University of the East stunned De La Salle, 86-69, for its only second win of the tournament.
Anna Requiron had 22 points 15 rebounds and five blocks to lead the Lady Warriors, while Christine Cortizano added 21 points and four assists for the last year’s runner-up.
The Lady Archers, who drew 17 points from Khate Castillo, suffered their third loss in eight contests to drop in third place.
