Miriam, CEU sweep eliminations; jrs semis cast complete

Defending midgets champion Miriam College completed a four-game sweep of the elimination round while juniors holder Chiang Kai Shek College led the march to the semifinals of the 49th WNCAA basketball tournament at St. Jude Catholic School gym recently.

Miriam beat host St. Paul College Pasig, 57-47, and automatically clinched the first finals seat.

St. Paul then whipped St. Stephen’s High School, 49-20, while De La Salle Zobel dispatched San Beda College Alabang, 54-20, in the quarterfinals on Sunday. The winners will tangle for the right to challenge Miriam.

In the juniors quarterfinals, CKSC downed Miriam, 76-49, and will battle La Salle College Antipolo, which ousted Poveda, 51-35.

The other semifinal duel will be between DLSZ, which took out St. Paul 81-27, and St. Jude, a 58-53 winner over San Beda.

The juniors semifinal is slated on Nov. 10.

Seven-time seniors champion Centro Escolar University also swept the six-game eliminations after trouncing University of Asia & the Pacific, 105-9.

Philippine Women’s University grabbed the No. 2 seeding with a walkover win over Assumption.

In volleyball, CEU, LSCA and DLSZ likewise secured the No. 1 ranking in the semifinals.

CEU downed University of Makati, 25-18, 25-11, 20-25, 25-23, for a six-game sweep of the preliminaries at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Defending seniors champion San Beda booked the No. 2 spot with a 5-1 card.
