UCBL Season 3: Olivarez whips TIP
Olivarez College primed itself up for the semifinals as it smothered Technological Institute of the Philippines, 82-67, on Monday in the University and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) Season 3 at Olivarez gym in Parañaque. The Sea Lions struggled in the early goings but picked themselves up before the half, overcoming a 12-point deficit in the first quarter by dominating the next three on their way to the romp. Lawrence Castro came away with 26 points on 11-of-17 shooting clip from the field and finished with four assists, three steals and two rebounds and three turnovers while Harond Sala and Joshua Almajeda combined for 27 points for the hosts. Inaugural champion Centro Escolar U and Diliman College clash this Thursday to determine the No. 1 seed.
WNCAA: CEU, CKSC, Miriam keep titles
Centro Escolar University, Chiang Kai Shek College and Miriam College retained their basketball crowns via two-game sweeps in the 49th Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) at Rizal Memorial Coliseum over the weekend. CEU, starring Mercy Lawan who fired a game-high 17 points, seized its eighth straight seniors plum after upending Philippine Women’s U 75-68 in Game 1 and 78-39 in Saturday’s Game 2. Miriam also kept its midgets title after beating host St. Paul College Pasig 50-49 in Game 1 and 61-29 in Game 2. Miriam got 39 points from last year’s Most Valuable Player Camille Dianne Nolasco. Chiang Kai Shek College completed a juniors three-peat, overwhelming De La Salle Zobel in Games 1 (69-36) and 2 (75-54).
