Fencers, cyclists chasing Olympic slots

MANILA, Philippines — Fencing and cycling are still chasing the last bus to London.

Officials of the two sports associations yesterday said there is still a chance to qualify athletes for the London Olympics in July and that the national fencers and cyclists are preparing hard for their respective qualifiers.

Fencing association chief Victor Africa and executive director Maria Leonor Estampador said in yesterday’s Scoop sa Kamayan that Emerson Segui, Wally Mendoza and Arizona-based Michelle Marcelino are vying in the Games qualifier in Japan this April.

Philcycling secretary general Armando Bautista said they are hoping to send Fil-Ams Daniel Caluag and Alexander Vergara to the Olympics. The two cyclists were barred from vying in the recent Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia because, according to Bautista, they were carrying competition licenses from both PhilCycling and the United States.
