Weight woes bugging Vazquez before Donaire bout?

/ 11:44 PM January 28, 2012

Wilfredo Vazquez Jr., the Puerto Rican slugger Nonito Donaire Jr. will face for WBO super bantamweight title bout on Feb. 4, was overweight in a weight check conducted a week before their clash at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Internet reports said the 27-year-old Vazquez, dubbed as Papito or WV2, eventually made the cut after he worked out and ran last Friday and his handlers said there was nothing to worry about.

“Vazquez had just eaten when they weighed him,” his co-promoter Felix Zabala was quoted by boxingscene.com.

“There is no problem. He went and worked out and ran after and then he made the weight. It is something to just make a story. He isn’t having any problems at all. After his workout his weight was fine,” Zabala said.

The Puerto Rico boxing commission requires that Vazquez meet the 128.1-lb limit, five percent above 122-lb flyweight ceiling, one week before the actual weigh-in. Vazquez, son of three-division champ Wilfredo Vazquez, reportedly checked in at 132.6 lb.

Though Vazquez eventually made the weight, the incident raised some questions as to how the Puerto Rican can make the weight next week and still be in tip-top shape to face a boxer with cutting-edge skill like Donaire.

Donaire, known as the Filipino Flash, is aching for a spectacular fight after his boring bout with Omar Narvaez last October in New York City.
