MANILA, Philippines—Fast-rising prizefighter Dodie Boy Peñalosa Jr. punished Super James Singmanasak of Thailand right at the opening bell and scored a first-round technical knockout victory Saturday night at the Recom Dome in Caloocan City.
The fight card was marred by news that flyweight Karlo Maquinto, representing Baguio City’s Shape Up Boxing Gym, slipped into a coma after holding Mark Joseph Costa to a pulsating draw over eight rounds.
The end for the brash but tentative Singmanasak came in two minutes 44 seconds of the scheduled 10-round super bantamweight bout.
Peñalosa’s quick victory elicited both cheers and jeers from the spectators and created no clear gauge that he is ready for a possible world title bout.
The son of two-time world champion Dodie Boy Sr. and nephew of Gerry Peñalosa improved his record to 8-0.
Peñalosa, who came in at 124 pounds, tagged Singmanasak (122 lb) several times with heavy punches in the first two minutes before setting up the haymakers that put the Thai away.
The Filipino connected with a left hook to the jaw and then followed it up with a left straight that floored the Thai.
Seeing Singmanasak’s helplessness, referee Silvester Abainza stopped the fight.
