MANILA, Philippines—New year, new hair.

Phoenix star Matthew Wright finally ditched his curly tops to sport a new buzz cut as part of a new version of him for 2019.

“I just felt like it was a new year, this was my hair for a long time,” said Wright after the Fuel Masters’ Friday practice at Upper Deck. “I think it’s time for a change, a new hairstyle, I feel like I could just go out of bed and look more like a basketball player.”

Wright has been wearing his hair the same since he entered the league in 2016 as part of the special draft from which the members of the Gilas program were taken.

It was essentially a fade cut that had a curly top, much like what Ryota Miyagi of the iconic Slam Dunk anime sported.

Wright said he wanted to look different and that he’d end up looking the same as before in a few months.

“It’s just a change of scenery, it’s hair, it’s going to grow back,” said Wright who’s also aware that his hair has been the subject of several memes. “If it looks ugly, in three or four months, it will be back to how it was before.”

“It’s not really a big deal, even here in Phoenix they were teasing me, but I don’t mind. It’s just hair.”

Aside from the new do, Wright also got a fresh contract with the Fuel Masters, who are eager to surpass last conference’s playoffs breakthrough this season.
