GERMAN ATP: Huey, partner bow in finals

MANILA, Philippines—Treat Huey, the Philippines’ top gun in the coming Davis Cup tie, and Dominic Inglot of Great Britain reached the men’s doubles final of the German ATP championship before losing to Sweden’ Johan Brunstrom and Denmark’s Frederik Nielsen, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6, Saturday.

Huey and Inglot earlier beat Lukas Slouhy of the Czech Republic and Alexander Waske of Germany, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, to make it to the championship of the indoor, hardcourt event held in Heilbronn.

It was another fine showing for Huey, ranked No. 51 in the doubles, who reached the second round of the Australian Open last month with a different partner.

The 26-year-old Huey is set to arrive in Manila tomorrow to join the Cebuana Lhuillier-Philippine Davis Cup team which will take on Pacific Oceania in their Asia/Oceania Group 2 tie in Iriga City on Feb. 10 to 12.

Non-playing team Cecil Mamiit, US-based Ruben Gonzales and Jeson Patrombon arrived yesterday and were scheduled to proceed to Camarines Sur today along with veteran campaigner Johnny Arcilla.

Philippine Tennis Association president Rep. Edwin Olivarez expressed optimism of the country’s chances in the tie which will be hosted for the first time by Iriga City through Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmen.

The Pacific Oceania squad will be composed of Michael Leong, its top player from Solomon Island, doubles players Daniel Llarenas and Cyril Jacobe and first-timer Aymeric Mara of Vanuatu.
