MANILA, Philippines—Beau Belga has always been a loud and large presence for Rain or Shine since he joined the team in 2011 and that still continues to the current 2019 PBA season.
The frank bruiser was seen barking orders to his teammates in the Elasto Painters’ 85-72 win over Alaska in the PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena, and some may see it as berating but Belga said it’s just part of the tough love he gives his teammates.
“I’m always at them,” said Belga. “I tell them what’s wrong and what’s right and I think everyone’s benefitting from this especially for me since I can play long minutes.”
Belga had a productive night of 11 points, six rebounds, and five assists in 29 minutes of play as the Elasto Painters took sole possession of the second seed with a 4-1 card.
The 6-foot-4 big man said his tough love would eventually help his younger teammates, especially rookies Javee Mocon and JJay Alejandro, to become better players in the future.
“It’s teaching the younger players respect, especially giving them to the older players here in the team,” said the 32-year-old Belga, who’s in his 11th season.
“I’m thankful to the younger players because they always listen and I won’t do anything that wouldn’t benefit them.”
Belga added that he’s not just being vocal with his teammates, he’s also showing by example the proper way of doing things and being a professional in and out of the basketball floor.
“As a veteran I can never show frustration because I can’t show any negative body language to them,” said Belga. “I should always say positive things that they would eventually follow.”
