San Miguel Beer leaned on Allan Caidic and Danny Ildefonso to carve out a 96-83 trouncing of Alaska in the “Return of the Rivals” benefit showcase on Sunday night at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Aptly called the “Triggerman,” the ageless Caidic shone when it mattered most. He uncorked four triples in the final period as San Miguel snuffed out Alaska’s ’comeback bid.
The 55-year-old Caidic, the Philippine Basketball Association’s 1990 Most Valuable Player who suited up for San Miguel from 1993 to 1998, led all Beermen with 26 points.
After a lethargic first-half performance, Ildefonso made his presence felt in the third frame, conspiring with Denok Miranda to knot the game at 49. He went on to pour in 13 of his total 14 points in the second half.
“Do you have painkillers?” Caidic, who still holds the PBA record for most triples (17) in a game, said in jest during the post-game chat.
“We’re no longer used to man-to-man defenses that run for 12 minutes,” said Caidic.
“It’s challenging on our part. But more than the result, more than the game, it’s about the solidarity of the players, the support of the fans.”
Alaska dictated the pace behind the backcourt partnership of two-time MVP Willie Miller and 1996 MVP Johnny Abarrientos, who accounted for 20 and 11 points, respectively.
Proceeds of the event that includes the Ginebra-Purefoods duel ongoing at press time will benefit the Samahan ng mga Dating Propesyonal na Basketbolista ng Pilipinas Foundation, Inc.
