Javee Mocon recognized as top PBA rookie for February

MANILA, Philippines—Rain or Shine freshman Javee Mocon hustled his way atop the youngsters’ ladder after being named the PBA Press Corps Rookie of the Month for February in the Philippine Cup.

Mocon, who played for San Beda in college, averaged 5.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 20.2 minutes as the Elasto Painters went 5-of-5 in their games this past month.

Overall, Mocon averaged 7.3 points, a team-leading 7.6 rebounds, and 1.8 assists with Rain or Shine taking a league-best 7-1 record.

The sixth overall pick of the 2018 PBA Rookie Draft opened February in a big way putting up 18 points, 17 rebounds, and four assists in the Elasto Painters’ 108-98 win over defending champion San Miguel.

Mocon bested top pick CJ Perez, the Rookie of the Month for January, who normed 15.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.3 assists with Columbian going 1-2 in its three February games.

Other rookies who got the media’s nods are Alaska’s Jesper Ayaay (7.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists), NLEX’ Kris Porter (6.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.5 assists), and NorthPort’s Robert Bolick (9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists).
