The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, led by its president Al Panlilio, commended the UAAP for its successful staging of the 3×3 tournament on March 2 and 3 at Ayala Malls Feliz in Pasig City.
Panlilio expressed his gratitude to the UAAP for helping the SBP in promoting 3-on-3 basketball, which is one of the fast growing sports today.
“The alignment forged by the UAAP 3×3 organizers with the SBP is what we’ve been actively espousing. We are very pleased that the UAAP 3×3 with their 3×3 commissioner Xavier Nunag and SBP 3×3 program head Ronnie Magsanoc were able to establish a strong link and partnership that benefitted our country in our goal to generate as many points as possible,” said Panlilio.
Panlilio is referring to the Philippines’ bid to earn an Olympic 3-on-3 slot via ranking points.
Each 3-on-3 tournament held in the country earns points and helps our bid.
“Remember that 3×3 is now an Olympic sport and that’s why I am calling on all independent 3×3 event organizers to align with coach Ronnie so that they can be guided accordingly on the correct formula in running their respective tournaments,” said Panlilio.
This year’s UAAP 3×3 tournament was hosted by Far Eastern University. Ateneo and National University ruled the men’s and women’s division, respectively.
“This year’s iteration, may I say a smashing success – so much so that we definitely need a bigger venue next year,” said UAAP executive director Rebo Saguisag.
“From the players, the media coverage and most importantly the fans, Season 81 3×3 did not lack in star power. The UAAP is definitely looking at making 3×3 a regular event.”
Led by Thirdy Ravena and Angelo Kouame, the Blue Eagles beat University of Santo Tomas, 19-13, in the men’s 3×3 finals.
The Lady Bulldogs, on the other hand, were merciless in handing Adamson a 21-3 beatdown in the championship round.
