Quezon City power forward Jay Collado couldn’t have picked a better time to deliver his finest game of the season.
The veteran dropped 27 points as the seventh-seeded Capitals pulled off the first upset in the MPBL Datu Cup playoffs with an 88-77 trouncing of No. 2 Makati Super Crunch on Wednesday night at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Super Crunch came into the game with a 15-game winning streak—a league record they established by beating the Capitals two weeks ago in their final elimination round game.
But Makati came undone by a combination of Quezon City’s stellar outside shooting and swarming defense that held the Super Crunch to just 33 percent shooting.
“Makati set the record against us so that gave us extra motivation,” said Quezon City coach Vis Valencia.
“We also wanted to be the ones who ended their winning streak. I’m glad the players stepped up.”
