MINNEAPOLIS – The NBA champion Dallas Mavericks welcomed Jason Kidd back from a six-game injury absence on Friday with a 104-97 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Kidd, Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry showed the form that took the Mavs to the NBA crown last season as they combined to score all 14 points in a 14-4 fourth-quarter scoring run that put Dallas firmly in control.

“Jason Kidd was back in rare form,” Terry said. “He makes the game so much easier for everybody. With him controlling it, I know I’m going to get good shots.

“He knows us like the back of his hand. It’s definitely where we’re most comfortable, especially when it’s time to win.”

Kidd showed a few signs of rust, notably eight turnovers. But with 10 assists he got the offence flowing and keyed a Mavericks defence that forced 27 turnovers.

“He was missed,” said Lamar Odom. “If you ever played football, you know you need your quarterback. J-Kidd is our quarterback. He knows how to get guys shots and control the tempo.”

Nowitzki, who has struggled this season to regain the form that made him Most Valuable Player of the NBA finals, seemed buoyed by Kidd’s return, scoring a season-best 33 points.
