Miguel Tabuena will be shooting for a piece of history when the $500,000 Solaire Philippine Open tees off April 3 at windswept The Country Club in Laguna.
No player in the last 60 years has successfully defended Asia’s oldest national championship, and that will be motivation enough for the talented Tabuena, who will banner a crack field of local bets in the 72-hole championship.
Another title would also give the Rio Olympics veteran the distinction of being just the sixth player to win it at least thrice, having also triumphed in the rain-shortened version in 2015 at Luisita.
Larry Montes won it a total of 12 times; the late great Celestino Tugot triumphed in six editions and JRH Mason won it five times.
