MANILA, Philippines—Adamson University is officially out of the Final Four contention in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament but that doesn’t mean head coach Onyok Getigan will let his players slack off.
Getigan, who took over the team four games into its campaign, said he would start the Lady Falcons’ preparation for Season 82 as early as their next game against De La Salle on April 7.
The Lady Falcons dropped their last game in the tournament to National University, 28-26, 30-32, 25-21, 25-22, putting their record to a league-worst 1-9 card effectively ending their season.
“Actually for me, I want to start preparing immediately,” said Getigan Sunday at Mall of Asia Arena. “When I came in as the team’s ne head coach, I said to myself that there are a lot of things that need to be changed.”
“The system is important, second is the selection of players. I want players I can trust until the end and not just the ones who want to win a set, but the ones who want to wing everything.”
Getigan previously handled King’s Montessori School that won the Girls 18 and Under national tournament of the Rebisco Volleyball League National Championship in 2018 but he had to go into rebuild mode when he replaced Air Padda as the Lady Falcons’ head coach earlier in the season.
Although Getigan won his first game with the Lady Falcons, a three-set sweep of the Lady Bulldogs in the first round, the road did not produce another victory.
Getigan said that they just have to play for pride and that they should not think of the standings anymore as they set their eyes for the 2020 tournament.
“I told them that the standings are not important anymore,” said Getigan. “The best thing to look at is how we play on the court because it will ultimately help us next season. The people will see the change next season.”
