SYKES Philippines dominates Manila and Cebu Inter-BPO Basketball Leagues
SYKES reigned supreme in the Recreational and Recreational Plus divisions of the Men’s Basketball Tournament in the recently concluded BPO Classics Conference held recently at the Phenom Sports Center in Makati City while the SYKES Cebu Pioneers also clinched the title in the City Sports Club-Cebu’s (CSCC) E-League Basketball Tournament at the CSCC Gym.
SYKES’ Recreational Division team was a heavy favorite entering the finals after they swept the elimination round. Meanwhile, the Recreational Plus Division SYKES team finished fourth in the elimination round but stunned everyone when they defeated top-seeded Wells Fargo in the semis.
In the first game of the BPO Classics double-header, the Recreational Division SYKES team built an early lead with its scoring efficiency and rebounding prowess. IQVIA rallied to close the gap but fell short to the two-time champions who secured another title with a decisive 73-67 win.
In the second match, SYKES faced the number 2 seed Sitel and trailed for most of the game. A late rally and crucial defensive stops in the last 2 minutes gave SYKES the edge and the team delivered a thrilling upset win to claim its first Recreational Plus Division title.
SYKES’ Michael Mostrales and Renan de Leon received the Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards for the Recreational and Recreational Plus divisions respectively. Meanwhile, SYKES’ Jerson Moriska (Recreational) and Noel Rivera (Recreational Plus) were named Best Players of the championship games.
In Cebu, the SYKES Pioneers team had to force a do-or-die game in their best-of-three series versus Accenture to have one more shot at the title in the Elite Classic Division.
With the game locked at 65 apiece and only 1:13 left in the clock, SYKES relied on its stars to counter top-seeded Accenture’s late offensive push and finally end the Pioneers’ 14-year title drought. Finals MVP Victor Manuel Rabat, Jan Michael Auditor and Earldred Cesar Montilla combined for 61 of SYKES’ 70 points.
Auditor, who finished as the season’s top scorer, also bagged both the Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player awards, becoming only the third player to do so in league history.
SYKES’ strong showing in the Inter-BPO tournaments was no accident. The company has been known for its “Work. Learn. Grow” mantra which extends outside the office.
Lia Lynn Marcos, SYKES Senior Director for Human Resources in the Asia Pacific, shares SYKES’ formula for success, “We encourage our employees to pursue their passions even while working because we believe in the importance of work-life integration. Through their exposure to external competitions they learn to develop physical and interpersonal skills that would help them grow personally and professionally.”
