Filoil Flying V: La Salle outlasts NU, UE fights off Mapua
MANILA—The De La Salle Green Archers drew an unlikely offensive source in Almond Vosotros as they outlasted the National University Bulldogs, 81-74, in overtime Wednesday in the 2011 Filoil Flying V Preseason Premiere Cup at the Arena in San Juan.
Vosotros, a pass-first point guard, unleashed 17 points including a timely three-point play with 1:30 left in overtime that extended the Archers lead to five, 77-72.
Article continues after this advertisementJoseph Marata’s pull-up three knotted the match at 68-all with 1:22 left that forced extra session.
NU, which suffered its third straight setback, rallied from 19 points down and even took a three-point lead, 68-65 at the 1:38 mark of regulation.
Blue chip rookie Bobby Ray Parks Jr. took home game-high honors anew with 29 points which included a thunderous throwdown over the outstretched arms of shot-blocker Papot Paredes to close out the second period.
Article continues after this advertisementThe Bulldogs fell to 4-3 while the Green Archers upped their mark to 2-2.
La Salle, which is fresh from its annual US training, showed no signs rust as it jumped on NU with a barrage of triples.
Meanwhile, the University of the East Red Warriors fended off a furious fightback by the Mapua Cardinals at they hacked out an 82-79 triumph.
Paul Zamar shot 24 points for the Red Warriors.
Allan Mangahas paced the Cardinals with a double-double of 20 markers and 12 boards while also dishing out five dimes.
UE improved its record to 4-4 while Mapua dropped to 3-3.
