It looks as though the country won’t only be measured by its success on the medal table in the Southeast Asian Games this year.

It will also be judged by how it performs as a host.

Echoing sentiments of sports officials, Rep. Mikee Romero said finishing on top of the overall standings is as important as showing world-class hospitality in the 11-nation sportsfest that kicks off later this year.

“We can achieve this SEA Games double if we win the overall championship for the first time since 2005,” said Romero, the benefactor of the Philippine basketball squad that nailed the gold medal in the 2007 edition in Thailand.

Romero said the other win would come from hosting the best edition of the games that will kick off on Nov. 30 and have events in Clark, Subic, Metro Manila and Tagaytay City.

“With the way our officials are doing their jobs, I’m sure will have a successful hosting of the biennial meet. That way we will have a double celebration,” said Romero.

“Let us embrace the ‘bayanihan’ spirit so that they will know how gracious we are as hosts,” added Romero, who also urged the national athletes to give their best as the country seeks to finish atop the standings.

The Philippine SEA Games Organizing Committee recently launched the volunteer program to help foreign athletes, coaches and spectators during the Games.
