Gilas women’s awaits fate as it splits main draw assignments in Fiba 3×3 Asia Cup

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Women’s 3×3 slowed down a bit after a perfect run in the Qualifying Draw A splitting its two games in the pool stage of the Fiba 3×3 Asia Cup Friday in Changsan, China.

The Philippines, which went a perfect 3-0 in the Qualifying Draw A, lost to Japan 20-8 in its first game in Pool C but recovered with a 21-6 beatdown of Sri Lanka later.

Janine Pontejos had three points for Gilas against Japan, but struggled from the field going 2-of-9 while Jack Danielle Animam had two points and five rebounds.

Afril Bernardino’s nine-point and nine-rebound performance, meanwhile, powered the Philippines past Sri Lanka.

Clare Castro added six points and seven rebounds for Gilas who now own a 1-1 record in Pool C, needing Sri Lanka to lose its next game against Japan to advance to the next round.

Prasadi Fonseka had three points to lead Sri Lanka.
