The Philippines ended its campaign in the 2012 World 8-Ball Championship as last Filipino bet Roberto Gomez bowed out in the quarterfinals late Thursday at Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.
Gomez yielded to Great Britain’s Chris Melling, 9-4, in the round-of-8 after Filipino bets Lee Vann Corteza and Carlo Biado ended their bids in the previous round.
World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo also got a surprise boot when Poland’s Karol Skowerski whipped top Filipino bet, 9-3, in the round-of-32 late Wednesday.
Gomez got off to a strong start by downing Great Britain’s Mark Gray, 9-6, in the round-of-32, before clipping Japan’s Yukio Akagariyama, 9-5, in the following round.
Biado beat Japan’s Toru Kuribayashi, 9-1, but stumbled in the round-of-16 against Chinese Taipei’s Chang Jun Lin, 9-3.
Another Chinese Taipei bet, Fu Che Wei, ended Corteza’s bid in the same round, 9-5.
