The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has written the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recently, with the local body inquiring about the role of Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski, who sits as a member of the executive board/governing committee while at the same time being the IOC’s representative to the country.
The Inquirer obtained a copy of the letter sent to the IOC, where the local Olympic body sought a clarification on the role of Cojuangco-Jaworski after the latter took part in a meeting that POC president Ricky Vargas said was part of a “destabilization” move.
Cojuangco-Jaworski’s father is former president Peping Cojuangco and the group that is currently at war with the Vargas administration includes officials loyal to the former congressman.
The POC also wants to clear Cojuangco-Jaworski’s concurrent roles as IOC representative and member of the executive board.
The letter also questioned Cojuangco-Jaworski’s demeanor and disposition during that meeting, where she supposedly acted in the same manner as other angry members of the board “who are not IOC representatives.”
Vargas relieved Peping Cojuangco and his supporters of their posts during a heated general assembly on Monday because of what he said was an illegal meeting of the board.
President Duterte has since stepped in and threw Malacañang’s full support behind Vargas and his officers.
Even Rep. Mikee Romero, the chair of the House subcommittee on sports and vice chair of the mother committee on youth and sports, also aired his support toward Vargas, a fellow member of the board of the PBA.
