The star-studded national women’s volleyball team is about to get the spotlight it deserves.
If plans push through, the Nationals will see action in the Philippine Superliga Invitational Cup in August—and will, as a team, be on the spotlight as they play in one of the biggest commercial tournaments in the land.
The Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas Inc. said they want to pit the women’s squad against the top teams in the league, including champion teams Petron, F2 Logistics and Foton.
LVPI president Peter Cayco said the plan is for the Philippine team to join the conference that normally invites foreign teams like Est Cola of Thailand.
But the players will have to play for their mother teams when they battle the Nationals.
The Philippine team stint in the PSL, according to Cayco, will also help drum up interest for the squad, which is seeing action in the Southeast Asian Games slated Nov. 30 to Dec. 11.
However, PSL officials said they are still working on the national team arrangement and waiting for the approval of all member teams.
Another sticky point is how players like team leader Alyssa Valdez, Jia Morado and Jema Galanza can play in the PSL when they are regulars in the rival loop Premier Volleyball League.
The PSL will unveil the All Filipino Conference later this month with nine teams slugging it out.
The Philippine team, which won just one game in the Asiad last year, is set to start training this week and is slated to undergo training camp in South Korea and China starting September.
