Lyceum of the Philippines showed National University the door in the Filoil Flying V Preseason Cup following a 71-68 victory Monday at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

Jaycee Marcelino and Ralph Tansingco led the Pirates, who played without African center Mike Nzeusseu, with 11 points each while Niño Ibañez added 10.

The win gave Lyceum a 6-1 card to pace Group B while ousting the Bulldogs from further contention with a 2-3 record.

Miguel Oczon led NU with 14 points while Dave Ildefonso and John Lloyd Clemente each scored 13.

“We weren’t really trying to take the top position of Group B,” said Lyceum coach Topex Robinson. “We’re just trying to improve every game.”

Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas ran roughshod over Mapua, 91-67, after dropping 12 triples on the Cardinals and forcing the enemy to 21 turnovers.

The Growling Tigers used a stifling press that had them breaking away from a 32-31 game at halftime to lead by as large as 30 points on the way to improving to 2-4.

“This year, I have the players to implement what we want. But we are not yet there. We still have to work on a lot of things, but we are getting there,” said UST coach Aldin Ayo.
