Escoto gets his moment in limelight

Richard Escoto has longed for an opportunity to have his own signature moment—a play—that will elevate his status as a rising star.

That shot—a three-pointer off the board—came last Friday night at the Filoil Flying V Centre in San Juan, where the 6-foot-4 former Far Eastern U standout drilled the first buzzer-beating game-winner of the season that lifted expansion team Iloilo United Royals to their first victory at the expense of Parañaque Patriots, 67-64, in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League.

“Thank God it went in,” said Escoto, who was mobbed by teammates and Iloilo coaching staff as they celebrated the win.

“Every player dreams of making a shot to win the game for his team. I was fortunate to have my chance. It’s a blessing.”

The final play showcased Escoto’s versatility as he soared to grab the rebound off Parañaque forward Jemal Vizcarra’s miss before receiving a pass from a falling Aaron Jeruta for the triple.

Later, San Juan survived a furious fightback from Pasay to hack out a 74-72 victory to stay unbeaten just like Makati Super Crunch, which held off Bacolod Master Sardines, 84-74.
