Torn ACL, meniscus feared for Gilas Youth standout AJ Edu
MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Youth suffered a detrimental setback when star center AJ Edu got injured mere minutes into their 85-69 loss to Greece in the group stage of the 2019 Fiba Under 19 Basketball World Cup.
The initial diagnosis of Edu’s injury is a damaged anterior cruciate ligament and a torn meniscal tear in his right knee and a hairline fracture in his right femur bone.
Article continues after this advertisementEdu was fouled heading to the rim and he immediately grabbed his right knee when he landed.
“After the MRI was done, we requested an initial reading from the radiologist on duty,” said Gilas Youth physical therapist George Yorobe in an ESPN5 report.
Edu’s final diagnosis will be revealed on Monday (Athens time) once the hospital’s orthopedic doctor gets the chance and review the MRI images.
Article continues after this advertisementSamahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Al Panlilio immediately reached out to Edu and encouraged the 6-foot-11 Edu to keep a positive outlook.
“Know that the federation and I are behind you all the way, we will help you with whatever you need,” said Panlilio in the report. “As I said to all of you, playing for the national team is a journey we will all take together. We will be with you. No one will be left behind, reach out to me anytime.”
Gials youth head coach Sandy Arespacochaga was downtrodden with what happened to Edu, but he still hoped his big man could recover.
“It’s tough because he’s our defensive anchor. Right now we’re just hoping that he’s okay,” said Arespacochaga. “Hopefully the MRI is okay. Right now we’re just praying for good results.”
