Cool-headed Acosta fires up Biñan in rout of Basilan

BIÑAN—Blowing hot and cold early in the MPBL Lakan Season, Biñan City forward Macky Acosta knew he had to keep his emotions in check to help the Heroes’ address their inconsistent play.

Returning to the comforts of home at Alonte Sports Arena, Acosta let his shooting do the talking this time as he carried the Heroes to a 94-78 whipping of the Basilan Steel on Friday night.

“Coach Alex (Angeles) messaged me saying I have to check my temper so I could focus on helping the team,” said Acosta, a former Mapua Cardinal. “I can’t let opponents get into my head, otherwise, I can’t be effective for the team.”

Earlier, Manila turned an expected tight duel into an offensive showcase as it overwhelmed Pampanga, 92-76, while Zamboanga fought back from 12 points down in the last three minutes to stun Pasay, 83-82.

Aris Dionisio posted a double-double of 15 points and 10 boards that went with five blocks and four steals as the Stars climbed to 5-1, while sending the Giant Lanterns to a third loss in six games.

Diminutive guard Ryan Costelo fired 14 of his 22 points in the final period, including the game-winner with 15.6 seconds left as Zamboanga completed a remarkable fightback for a second straight win for a 3-3 card.

Matched up against Basilan’s rugged and physical frontcourt players, Acosta stepped out to the three-point zone and went 6-for-7 there to finish with a career-best 24 points.

“He was really determined to bounce back,” said Angeles, whose team improved to 3-4.
