MANILA, Philippines—Generika-Ayala buckled down and stopped Cignal HD in five sets, 26-24, 19-25, 26-24, 18-25, 16-14, in the Philippine Super Liga All-Filipino Conference Saturday at Filoil Flying V Center.
The Lifesavers pulled away late in the fifth set, scoring four straight points to get to the 14-11 match point but Rachel Anne Daquis’ kill and Alohi Robins-Hardy’s two consecutive blocks on Fiola Ceballos forced a deuce.
Ceballos, however, broke Robins-Hardy’s block for the 15-14 match point before Mylene Paat’s attack error sealed the match for the Lifesavers.
“I think the breaks went our way and we had our composure throughout the whole match,” said Generika-Ayala head coach Sherwin Meneses said in Filipino. “I saw their aggressiveness and they stepped up in the absence of their captain Angeli [Araneta]. Individually they’re all leaders and that’s what I like about them.”
Ria Meneses had 14 points for the Lifesavers while Mary Ann Mendrez and Patty Orendain had 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Generika-Ayala also stopped the HD Spikers’ three-game winning streak and improved to an 8-5 record, passing idle Foton, which holds a 7-5 slate, for the third spot.
Daquis finished with 20 points for Cignal which stayed at the fifth spot with a 6-6 card.
