NCR reasserts supremacy in 20th SCUAA Olympics

MANILA, Philippines — National Capital Region captured the overall championship anew at the close of the 2012 National SCUAA (State Colleges and Universities) Olympics Sunday at the Iloilo Sports Complex in Iloilo City.

Flaunting their might in nearly all sports, the Big City bets finished with 114 gold medals on top of 55 silvers and 50 bronzes in the weeklong competition among top student athletes from the country’s state colleges and universities.

Host Region 6 (Western Visayas) finished a distant second overall with a gold-silver-bronze medal tally of 46-57-33, while Region 3 (Central Luzon) wound up third with a 32-36-38 haul.

Region 6 ruled men’s football, beating NCR and Cordillera Autonomous Region. The West Visayans also seized the gold in men’s basketball with Region 3 placing second and NCR third.

The women’s basketball gold, however, went to NCR. Region 6 and CAR pocketed the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

NCR swept the gold medals in men’s and women’s volleyball and also prevailed in
men’s tennis, men’s table tennis, women’s beach volleyball and women’s softball.

Region 3 topped women’s tennis and women’s table tennis while Region 4 and Region 5 dominated men’s and women’s badminton, respectively.

NCR swept all eight gold medals at stake in men’s and women’s chess and all eight in dancesports events.

In boxing, Region 6 captured four of the six gold medals at stake. Region 4 and Region 12 won one gold medal each.

More than 5,000 delegates and officials from the 111 SUCs all over the country took part in the multisport event hosted by the Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges (Pasuc) Region VI.

The event was hosted by Dr. Pablo E. Subong, president of the West Visayas State University; Dr. Benny Palma, president of Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, and Dr. Luis Sorolla, president of West Visayas College of Science and Technology.
