CEBU, Philippines—Mauricio Mendez is no stranger to the Philippines and he not only sees the country as a place to compete in but also as a second home.

The reigning champion of Ironman 70.3 Cebu meet held a fan meet-and-greet Friday at Shangri-La Mactan here and he was surprised he drew a crowd made up of spectators and fellow triathletes.

“Having that experience in literally another part of the world is just amazing so I’m super happy and grateful.”

Mendez ruled Cebu in 2018 clocking in at 3:21:29, more than 40 seconds faster than second placer Tyler Butterfield, who finished the course at 3:22:10.

Having experienced the adulation of the Filipino supporters, Mendez said he won’t let it go to waste come race day on Sunday.

“I just want to respond the same way, give everything and show the Filipinos the best version of myself,” said Mendez. “And the cheers play a huge role mentally. You just look forward to making them all happy.”
