MANILA, Philippines—Commissioner Chito Loyzaga has resigned his position as the Philippine Sports Commission’s executive director, a post he held had concurrently at the sports agency since last year.
But the basketball Hall of Famer will remain a PSC commissioner as he focuses his attention on tapping local government support to the agency’s grassroots development program, according to his spokesman Albert Almendralejo yesterday.
PSC chair Richie Garcia said he has appointed his executive assistant, lawyer Guillermo Iroy, to serve as acting executive director. Iroy is tasked with the day-to-day operations of the agency.
“The ED has a very difficult job in managing the PSC,” said Garcia. “It is a demanding task, and even more so if you are also a commissioner of the board.”
“He (Loyzaga) wanted to concentrate on the new thrust and directions of PSC which is priority sports,” said Almendralejo. “The PSC needs somebody to relate with LGUs and implement grassroots program, which is a mandate of the PSC.”
Garcia said the position of ED is very sensitive it requires lofty qualifications like a five-year experience in sports management.
“That’s why we often have ED in the PSC only on an acting capacity because it’s hard to fill up the position based on the law,” he added.
Iroy served as ED during the time of PSC chair Butch Ramirez in the early 2000s. He will start in his new job on March 1, according to the memorandum issued last Feb. 27.
