PBA board meeting agenda: New format, ‘sister’ trades

08:36 AM August 24, 2010
MANILA, Philippines—The return of the three-conference format and the policy regarding trades involving sister teams with a third party conduit will be major talking points when the PBA Board holds its planning session for the coming season from Sept. 1 to 3 in Hong Kong.   Outgoing PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios and PBA chair Rene Pardo disclosed some of the agenda of the planning session for the league’s 36th season Tuesday at the PSA Forum at the Shakey’s UN Avenue in Manila.   The activity will be one of the first official functions of incoming league commissioner Chito Salud.   Barrios said the All-Filipino tournament and the reinforced conference will be retained for next season, with the league to decide on the guidelines for the third conference, which will also be import-flavored.   As far as the trades involving sister teams with a third team as conduit are concerned, Barrios said results of focus-group discussions conducted by a research firm that the league tapped have validated their concerns that fans frown upon the rule.   “It’s a ticklish issue,” said Barrios. “I’m sure the PBA will address it.”   Barrios also announced that gate receipts for the league rose by 6.6 percent from the previous season – from P70.7 million to P75.3 million.
