Gilas Pilipinas arrives in China ahead of Fiba World Cup

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas has arrived in China a couple of days before opening game in the 2019 Fiba Basketball World Cup.

The Philippine national men’s basketball team arrived in Guangzhou Thursday [Manila time] afternoon but their games would be played at Foshan International Sports and Cultural Arena, which is around an hour drive from the airport.

Gilas’ first order of business in China is to run practices before its first game against Italy in Group D on Friday.

This would be the Philippines second straight stint in the World Cup after 2014 in Greece where the Filipinos beat Senegal 81-79 for their only win in the tournament.

The Philippines is looking for its first medal finish in the World Cup with its last one coming in 1954 when the Nationals took the bronze, which remains the best finish an Asian team has achieved.
