Spikers’ Turf: Perpetual sweeps pool C, Cignal still unscathed

MANILA, Philippines—University of Perpetual Help completed its sweep of Group C after a four-set beating of PLDT, 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17 in the 2019 Spikers’ Turf Open Conference at Paco Arena Thursday.

The Altas finished atop the group with a 5-0 record and they will just have to wait for the other teams to finish their matches.

“Actually I always say that our aim in this tournament is to get some exposure and I was surprised with how PLDT played today,” said Perpetual head coach Sammy Acaylar in Filipino. “That’s [PLDT] is a very strong team, that’s a club team, maybe luck was on our side today.”

Joebert Almodiel led all scorers with 18 points while Hero Austria added 16 points for the Altas.

Ronniel Rosales and Louie Ramirez also finished in double digits with 15 and 12 points, respectively, while EJ Casana orchestrated the offense with 26 excellent sets.

Richard Solis had 16 points for PLDT.

Cignal, meanwhile, remained atop Group A with a clean sweep of Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18.

Alfred Valbuena led the 3-0 HD Spikers with 11 points.

“Everyone contributed because whomever I put in can score,” said Cignal head coach Dexter Clamor who had 10 of his 13 points register at least one point.

Edmar Banono added 10 points for Cignal while AJ Pareja had nine.

Joshua Mina put up 12 points for the Generals who tallied their third loss in four matches.

In the first game, PGJC-Philippine Navy chalked up its second straight win after taking down University of Santo Tomas in straight sets, 25-20, 25-21, 25-18.

Greg Dolor led the Sea Lions with 10 points while Kurl Rosete added nine points as Navy forged a tie with Sta. Elena atop Group D with 2-0 records.
